ALONZA "COONEY" BOONE, JR.
 

 

Alonza "Cooney" Boone Jr., 58, of Newport News (previously of Pitchkettle Road in Suffolk), became absent from his body, and his spirit went to be with Lord on Dec. 2, 2007. He was born on March 4, 1949, to the late Alonza "Buddy" Boone Sr. and Marie Franklin Boone. He was the first born of three siblings. He was a 1967 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, attended Norfolk State University and received his bachelor's degree in 1993 and master's degree in 1995 from Strayer University. He retired from the U.S. Army as chief warrant officer 4 after serving 26 years. He was employed at Fort Eustis as a systems analyst and retired in 2006 due to his illness.

A former resident of Dale City, he was an active member of Dale City Christian Church from 1992-2002, where he served on the Deacon Board and was later ordained as Elder. He was reared in St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church, Suffolk. After relocating to Newport News in 2003, he attended Revelation A.M.E. Zion Church, where he was a faithful supporter. He later became a member of Restoration Family Life Center, Newport News. His main values were loving God, having a relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and raising and establishing good, as well as Godly, values in his children's lives. His famous words were "Let's Pray."

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 31 years, Barbara Boone, who was a faithful supporter of his career and totally dedicated to his care. Two sons, Austin Alonza Boone of Fountain, Colo., Derren Lamar Boone of Newport News; two sisters, Pinky Boone-Brown of Portsmouth and Lessi Boone Mizelle of Suffolk; one daughter-in-law, Dianalou "Princess" Boone of Fountain, Colo. two brothers-in-law, Michael Mizelle of Suffolk and David Davis of Ft. Smith, Ark. One grandchild, Malachi Austin Bernardo Boone; one uncle, Roosevelt Franklin of Suffolk; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and Leonard Sutton; three sisters-in-law, Linda Johnson, Deborah Armond of N. Little Rock, Ark., and Alice Haynes of Ft. Smith, Ark., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and friends.

A homegoing service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. On Thursday, Dec. 6, 2007, at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church, McKinley Ave., Suffolk with Pastor Odell Shaw officiating. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Interment will be held in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive guests at 610 Harrison Street, Suffolk, and assemble there for the procession to the church at 10 a.m. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
