Gloria J. Alston, 63, of 221 Knight Street, Suffolk, Va. passed away January 23, 2008 in the Riverpointe Rehabilitation Center, Va. Beach, Va. She was born in Suffolk, Virginia to the late Evelyn O. and Adam Johnson, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Alston and her sister, Rebecca Mae Gardner.
Mrs. Alston attended Booker T. Washington High School. She was employed with Suffolk Public Schools as a bus driver for 34 years and retired in 1995. She was a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA. She was also a member of the Greater Suffolk Elks Lodge and the LaVogue Social and Savings Club.
She leaves to treasure her memory: her daughters, Tondra L. Collins (Darrell) of Suffolk and Vonda R. Alston (Reginald) of Portsmouth; two sons, Andrčč Q. Johnson of Suffolk and Karlton O. Johnson (Davida) of Miami, FL; three brothers, Adam Johnson, Jr. (Oveda), Clarence Johnson ( Nell) and Sylvester Johnson (Carrie), 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; four brothers-in-law, Richard Alston (Diane), David Alston, Ray Harry and Timothy Harry; 6 sisters-in-law, Ruth Chapman (James), Raushana Alahad, Velvet Harry, Carolyn Harry (Ricky), Tammy Harry and Beatrice Hebb (James) of Baltimore, MD, god-daughter, Latharis C. Wilson of Suffolk; and other nieces, nephews, cousins, a grand host of friends, including special friends, Helen Peebles, Bernice Britt, Gloria Vinson, Elayne Applebee, Janice Davis and a very dear friend, Yvonne Brooks of Brooklyn, NY.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 1, 2008 at 12:00 Noon at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 125 County Street, Suffolk. A wake will be held Thursday, January 31, 2008 from 6p.m.-7p.m at the funeral home. Interment will be in Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 221 Knight Street, Suffolk. Crocker Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
