SUFFOLK - Georgia Lee Harris Matthews Pugh, formerly of the Bronx, N.Y., and most recently of Suffolk, went home to be with family and friends Wednesday evening, April 8, 2009. She joins her beloved mother, Lela Matthews Johnson and stepfather, Jack Johnson. In addition, her infant daughter, Madeline and the absolute love of her life, her husband, Clarence Givens Pugh Sr., whom she joined in marriage in Suffolk and left to raise a family in Harlem, N.Y. The family later moved to the Bronx.
She was born in Enfield, N.C., where she attended school until the age of 12 and continued her education in the Suffolk school system. Georgia worked for the New York City Department of Social Services for many years.
She leaves to mourn her loss her children, Patricia Anne Bright, Joyce E. Pugh-Garretson, Clarence G. Pugh Jr. and Randee Pugh. In addition, there are 12 grandchildren, Jennifer, Natalie, Faye, William "Billy", Raymond, Tara, Crystal, Clarence III, Victoria, Jason, Traci and Christopher; a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and a few great-great-great-grandchildren, cousins and friends.
Georgia loved her husband, her children, her church, her home, music, which was always in the home and her hats. In tribute to Georgia and her many hats, each lady attending the memorial is invited to wear one of Georgia's hats.
A wake will be held at Crocker Funeral Home, 900 East Washington St., Sunday at 5 p.m. On Monday at 11 a.m. the family will assemble at the residence on Hollywood Avenue and the processional to Carver Memorial Chapel for a homegoing service. Following this service, interment will be in the Pugh plot on the grounds of the cemetery. The family will fellowship at the residence following the service. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
