She graduated with the 1946 Class at Booker T. Washington High School, and was active with the alumni chapter. She was the oldest of nine children. She worked for many years at the Butter Dish and retired after 26 years at Thomas J. Lipton Tea Company, Suffolk. Helen was very active in the community. A Life Member and served as vice-president for the Suffolk Branch of the NAACP. She served as electorial official for the City of Suffolk. She was a member of the American Red Cross; the Fairground/Phoenix Bank Revitalization Committee; the Suffolk Beautification Committee; International Black Women's Congress (lBWC); Nansemond Chapter #31, Order of the Eastern Star of Virginia, Prince Hall Affiliation; Suffolk Elks Lodge; The Modelistics, and the Oakdale/Magnolia/Pierce Park Civic League. A devoted Christian, Helen was a lifetime member of Metropolitan Baptist Church. Her ministries include: Mass & Chapel Choirs; Deaconess Board; Sunday School Teacher; Harvesters' Missionary Circle and Founder & President of the Afro-Centric Ministry.
Helen was predeceased by her husband James Otis "Buck" Daughtrey and her daughter Brenda Carnice Daughtrey; two sisters, Delores Johnson and Georgina Johnson.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Rhonda D. Lambert (Romeo, Jr.) of Chesapeake; Sharon Daughtrey; Ida "Michelle" Faulk, and one step-daughter Virginia "Gin" (John) Ashburn, all of Suffolk, Va., a foster sister, Mildred P. Bishop of Suffolk, V A; three sisters Rosie, Elaine, and Mary Francis; three brothers, Jackie (Evelyn), Jerrod & Jerome, all of Maryland; three Godchildren: Patricia Johnson, Christopher Johnson, and Deidre (Don) Hill; six grand-children: Steven Faulk, Jr.; Romeo Lambert, III; Stephanie Lambert; Kahlil Daughtrey-Holden, AnToneah Daughtrey-Johnson; and one step-grandchild, Howard Goode; one great-grandchild, Veronica Faulk-Wilder; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends, including a very special devoted friend, Amanda Rodgers.
The family will receive friends at her home. The body will be placed in the church at 12:00 noon and the funeral will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 19,2009, at Metropolitan Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Robert Hobbs officiating. Burial will follow at Carver Cemetery with an Eastern Star ceremony. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge.
