SUFFOLK - John Walter Scott, Sr. "Sonny", 79, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 29, 2008 at his residence, 703 Eric Court, Suffolk. He was born in Nansemond County and was the son of the late Josephus and Louvenia Diggs Scott. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Chapman Scott.
He was a 1958 graduate of Norfolk Division of Virginia state College (now Norfolk State University) and received a certificate in Brick Masonry. He retired from Norfolk Naval Air Station in January 1988 after 29 years of service as a Mechanic.
Mr. Scott was very active in church and community activities. He was a faithful and dedicated member of Metropolitan Baptist Church where he was affiliated with many of the church ministries. He was a member of the Male Chorus, Chapel Choir, Mass Choir, and Men of Action. He participated in the Mentoring Program, was a former Sunday School teacher, Van Ministries, was a Team Parent for Cub Scout Pack #51, Team Parent for the football team, and former member of the Kitchen Committee. He was a Team Parent for the Wizards and Pacers Basket Ball Team, a member of the Commanders Club and Disabled Veterans Organization. He was an avid fisherman and blessed so many in the community with fish. His love for people was extended throughout the Hampton Roads Area.
He leaves a legacy of love and precious memories to those who survive him, his devoted wife, Felicia Scott; two daughters, Angela Hill (Raleigh) of Suffolk and Audrey Harris (Kenny) of Clinton, MD; eight sons, Randyll Scott (Samantha) of Portsmouth, John Scott, Jr. of Capron, Donald Scott, Timothy Scott (Catherine) of Suffolk, Vincent Scott (Monica) of Norfolk, Tracy Scott, Lynwood Scott (Monica), and D'Juan Scott, all of Suffolk; six sisters, Josephine Bradley, Alma Wooten (Cleveland) of Baltimore, MD, Pearlene Fulgham of Hobson (Suffolk), Lillie Wellons, Harriet Scott of Chuckatuck (Suffolk), and Mary Rice of Portsmouth; four brothers, Rev. James Scott (Patricia) of Baltimore, William Scott (Brenda), Jackson Scott of Newport News, and Joe Scott of Portsmouth; 37 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, James Chapman and Antionio Brown (Terry); five sisters-in-law, Mrs. Rosa Harris (Elbert), Daisy Towns, Minister Gwendolyn Strickland (Larry), Elder Joyce Myrick, Floria Chapman, Blondell Scott of Windsor, and Mary Scott of Fayetteville, NC; god-daughter, Melissa Boone of Suffolk; god-sister, Lillian Goodman, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
The service to celebrate his life and work will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Robert Hobbs, Pastor. Interment will be in the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Crocker Funeral Home Wednesday from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and at 703 Eric Court at other times. Crocker Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
