She retired from Planters Peanut Company. She was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church where she was President of the Senior Choir, Deaconess, member of Body by Faith and the Stewardess Board. She was also a member of Local Union 26.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, James E. Herndon, Sr.; four daughters, Linda Rodgers, Hazel Knight (Vernon), Gloria Herndon, Sandra Harris (Dennis) all of Suffolk; two sons, James E. Herndon, Jr. (Mary) of Suffolk and Alton Herndon (Sonya) of Oceanside, CA; twenty-one grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren;; two sisters, Pearl V. Adams and Sallie Person (Arthur); a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Brock; a special niece, Regina Herndon and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Saturday, July 11, 2009 at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church officiated by Pastor Wilmers Williams. Interment will be in Holly Grove Church Cemetery. The family will be at 820 Garfield Avenue in Suffolk. Crocker Funeral Home, Inc. is handling the arrangements.
