SUNBURY, NC - Robert Lee Harris, 78, of 991 Silver Spring Road, Sunbury, NC, passed away October 17, 2008 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk. He was a native of Nansemond County and son of the late Maker Harris and Gracie Felton Hurdle. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Maggie Hobbs.

Mr. Harris retired as a Machine Operator at Planters Peanut Company. He was a member of New Piney Grove Baptist Church, Gatesville, NC and the Middle Swamp Masonic Lodge.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Vivian Harris; four daughters, Peggy Boone (Norman), Chinita Single (Hardeep), and Vivian Brown, all of Suffolk and Joyce Smith (Alvin) of Gates, NC; three sons, Richard Council of Portsmouth, Robert Harris (Pamela) of Gatesville, NC and Roosevelt Harris (Valerie) of Gates County, NC; 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; one aunt, Orena Johnson of Suffolk; four sisters-in-law, Savannah Macintosh (Jessie), Cherry Brinkley (Charlie), Myrtle Eure, and Alice Hobbs; two brothers-in-law, Dr. Robert Hobbs (Susie) and Thurman Hobbs; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2008 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, Suffolk. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will assemble at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Lee Harris, Jr., 159 Mill Pond Road, Gates, NC at 12:00 noon Thursday. Crocker Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
