He attended the Suffolk Public schools and was retired from the Peanut City Iron Works. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II where he trained as a fire fighter.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Lillian Chapman of Suffolk; five daughters, Mary Harrell (Lyn) of Portsmouth, Sereta Hoggard (Elmer) of Gates, NC, Ella Williams (Benny) and Bettie Joe James, both of Jersey City, NJ and Brenda Sykes of Portsmouth; two sons, Edward L. Nichols of Brooklyn, NY and Robert L. Smith (Sabrina) of Norfolk; two sisters, Kita Ann Taylor of Norfolk and Georgia Mae Robinson of Seattle, WA; brother, Clyde Chapman (Daisy) of Suffolk; 38 grandchildren, 88 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Crocker Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will be at 512 Warwick Street, Suffolk.
