SUFFOLK - Walter Townsend, Sr., 80, of 1745 Mt. Lebanon Avenue, Suffolk, departed to his eternal home on March 20, 2008 at Sentara Obici Hospital. He was a native of Hobson, Nansemond County, and was born to the late Roy Lee and Dorothy Townsend. He was preceded in death by two sons, Paul Townsend and Walter Townsend, Jr.

He retired from the Cedar Point Golf Course in 1991 after 17 years of service. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church where he was a Trustee and sang in the Senior Choir, Gospel Choir, and Mass Choir.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Queenie Townsend; two daughters, Sherry Townsend of Upper Marlboro, MD and Melanie Townsend-Hinton (Clayton) of Portsmouth; five sons, Darrell Townsend (Kim) of Fort Washington, MD, James Townsend of Newport News, Craig Townsend of Suffolk, Brian Townsend of Hampton, and Earl Chaptman of Baltimore, MD; four sisters, Dorothy Walker of Colorado, Annie Mae Mann (Cyrus), Deloris Goodwin, and Ethel Pierce (William), all of Suffolk; two brothers, Earl Townsend of Newport News and Robert Townsell (Margaret) of Suffolk; five grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ola Williams of Philadelphia, PA and Mary Anderson of San Diego, CA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A service to celebrate his life and homegoing will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, 8300 Crittenden Road, Suffolk, officiated by The Rev. Melvin Little. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at 1745 Mt. Lebanon Avenue, (Hobson), Suffolk. Crocker Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
